Pop into the rooms and take a look at the wonderful cards on the wall – all home made and looking better than professional ones. Christmas card time is almost upon us and how proud we are when we make our own Christmas cards – come and have a go.

This class begins THURSDAY, 3 NOVEMBER, 9 – 11am and is a 3 week course, cost is $20. Raewyn will also cover the little Gift Tags in this class for those who wish to learn a bit more. Ring Raewyn on 973 6559 to book a place in this class or email the Centre by Wednesday 26th.

One Off Tutorial

It is titled -

How the crooks aim to rob you, or use your computer to steal from others.

This tutorial is designed to give you information that you can use today to
make your computing experience safer.

We will be looking at:

Malware that gets onto your computer uninvited
Malware that you invite onto your computer
Ways the crooks can trick you out of your money
Ways that crooks can steal your identity, and what they may do with it
Software that may help to protect you
Operating systems differences and susceptibility to attack
A whole glossary of terms, some which you will know, others which may be
new to you.

There are many examples of things to watch for, and videos to help broaden
your understanding.

The course is an interactive website that you run off your computer. Therefore
you will need to bring a USB drive to take it home with you. Thank you Peter.

On the same day, WEDNESDAY, there is a ‘MEET & GREET’ at 2pm.

If you haven’t been to the Centre recently and would like to pop in and say hello and look around or perhaps come and see about a course or bring us some suggestions on how we could help you or just come and have a tea or coffee, please do come.

Rugby World Cup

Dear Robbie

Congratulations on reaching your 50th Test as Coach of the Wallabies.

Can I start by saying what a great job you’ve been doing since you first started working for New Zealand Rugby in 2008. It has been a long-term task, but the plan to ensure the All Blacks win the World Cup at home in 2011 is coming together perfectly.

My idea of getting you to be hired by Australian Rugby as their national coach and then sabotage the Wallabies from within, in my own modest opinion, was an absolute masterstroke.
While our plan had many doubters, I always knew in my heart that the Aussies would fall for it. After reaching 50 tests as coach on the weekend, I think its only fitting to mention what I think is your top 10 highlights of sabotage to date:

1. Losing to Ireland
2. Giving Rocky the captaincy of the country he hadn’t played for in over two years, then stripping it off him right before the World Cup
3. Losing to Scotland
4. Not even getting close to winning the Bledisloe Cup back
5. Not picking a backup for Pocock in the World Cup squad
6. Never using the Wallaby bench effectively
7. Not having a back-up game plan
8. Using words like “contest, willing, collision, contact-zone, adaptation” to describe rugby
9. Losing to Samoa
10. Winning only 54% of all your games as coach of historically one of the most successful teams in Rugby

I can’t believe after all this they then extended your contract for a further two years?

However our plan to them win the Tri nations to suck them in to extend the Contract was very subtle- also the occasional loss when it didn't matter. Brilliant even if I say so myself.

How they didn’t work out our plan after you coached them to 10 Bledisloe cup losses in a row is full credit to you and we're all very proud of you at the NZRU.

All the best and I look forward to meeting up with you at Richies at the end of the tournament to celebrate.

“Managing Your Computer” is now a 4 week course at a cost of $25.

There is a workshop on Friday, 14th October, 9.30am, called ‘Enhancing your Newsletters’. Register with Nickie - 973 1474.

And there is a Skype Workshop on Tuesday, 18th October, 2 – 4pm

And on Wednesday, 19th October, 9 – 11am, (but you are asked to be here at 8.45am) a Workshop covering some topics as a follow on for those who have done the course “New To Computers”

However, if you are using Microsoft 2003 XP and have a moderate knowledge of how to operate a computer and are interested in these topics, feel free to register with Richard on 569 4149. The topics included will be – Tabs and margins; Tables; Autocorrect (spelling mistakes as you type); Inserting a picture; and Headers, footers and page numbering. Other topics will be added if there is time.

Googling it

GOOGLING IT

For years when we have not known something we have “googled" it.

There once was a time whenever you had a question you had to go down to the library, find a book, and then within the book, the answer ( you hoped at it was usually many years out of date). Now all we have to do is type a couple of keywords into Google and you have access to thousands of websites with answers.

Not only has Google provided us with the greatest research tool, but they offer many other tools, such as calendars, email, and what is essentially their equivalent of the Microsoft Office Suite.

And some reminders still for AUGUST - We have just held our FREE laptop day and those who are currently doing ‘New To Computers A’ you might like to register now for ‘New To Computers B’ which will be held on two Mondays, 15th & 22nd August, 11.30 – 1.30.

PUTTING THE PIECES TOGETHER

Last week several of your team met for a day long Management Concepts meeting.

The Federation has, along with the individual SeniorNets including ourselves, been concerned at the trend amongst most SeniorNets of declining membership and class numbers.

The Federation has decided that this is the Year of Revitalisation of SeniorNet and to this end it has arranged for what was styled a Management Concepts day hosted by Pat and Duncan Fuller from one of the growing SeniorNets, Nelson.

It was a tremendous day and we came away with many ideas. Although quite a few they put to us we already had in train, but they did clarify that our thinking was along the right lines and some of the problems we had about changing the way we do our business were solved. As you will realise it takes time to implement any new procedures (and that is why we are always looking for volunteers) but you will see some of the ideas put into action over the coming months.

The important thing is that action is taken; and we have already started doing this.

WHAT INTERNET BROWSER DO YOU USE ?

When we teach the Email and Internet Course at SeniorNet we only teach Internet Explorer as it is the one used by most people. However there are alternatives – Firefox – Chrome or even Opera

What you want to use depends - personal preferences, the browser wars, your computer's security and even global anti-trust lawsuits.

The browser debate began back when the web consisted of not much more than bulletin boards. Microsoft created IE to view these webpages. When Microsoft tightly integrated the browser into Windows, making it a critical part of the operating system, industry pundits (correctly as it turned out) lamented this as a disaster waiting to happen.

It wasn't long before the baddies targeted IE, exploiting its many security holes. So many viruses were created to exploit IE that the browser became by proxy the most efficient virus propagation software never written. Because IE is still integrated tightly into Windows, there is no feasible way for the average user to remove it.

Parallel to IE's development several other browsers were also on the boil, the most popular of which was Netscape Navigator. Navigator was far ahead of its time, but like many its bubble burst and the browser evaporated.

IE thus became the most popular browser not because it was the best, but because it was there.

A while back, Mozilla, the coding team behind the original Netscape suite, resurrected their code and split things up. We now know its programs as Firefox, Thunderbird, Sea Monkey, Lightning, Camino, Nvu and Kompozer.

The language used to build web pages is not standardised, so many pages built for IE do not look right in any other browser. This remains a huge headache for web developers who must test sites using multiple browsers. This is also the biggest complaint from people changing from IE to another browser - their favourite sites may not look the same and in extreme cases not render at all.

Most of us using alternative browsers reluctantly resort to IE when we absolutely must view such pages. Try them all and stick with the one you like best.

BE ALERT

Microsoft is warning users of fake security alerts arriving via email and reminding users that it never sends out email security alerts with attachments.

This scam takes advantage of Microsoft's well-established Patch Tuesday schedule; victims receive an email purporting to be from Microsoft's Director of Security Assurance, Steve Lipner (who in fact does hold that role).

The recipient is then told to install the attached file, KB453396-ENU.exe (or a similar name), which is supposed to be the security update. As usual the email has several spelling errors so it is highly unlikely any of our members would fall for the scam but we believe it is better to be safe than sorry.

The Tech Tem have sent an email to our tutors advising Office 2010 is now installed in Room 2 - replacing Office 2007 in the Windows 7 partitions.

This is their chance to have a play with Office 2010 and to help us by testing the 2010 manuals. The Computer Skills and Word Processing manuals have been translated from the 2007 versions and new Manuals will be printed as required.

This also gives them the opportunity to come and have a look at the new printer in Room 2 ! Those interested are asked to phone Brian T or the Centre to book a time.

As many know our printers were causing problems as age caught up with them, so the Tech Team were tasked to look into suitable replacements. After looking at various options they decided to purchase a Canon Pixma MG6150. Using our SeniorNet discount at Noel Leemings they were able to buy it at a heavily discounted price.

It is now fully installed and up and running ready for Term 1.

Its the time for an Electronic Xmas Card - or is it?

Electronic greeting cards seem such a good idea. A quick point and click at an online card service and you can send a cute Xmas Card animated with sounds or music.

Unfortunately, all too often they have a hidden agenda. You may be "giving" more than you think.

What's the one piece of information that an e-card service needs to have in order to deliver your card?

The email address of the recipient.

By entering an email address into an electronic greeting card service you're giving them, the greeting card company, a very valuable gift: a known good email address - they could be just email address harvesting

Do you trust them with it? Would the recipient want you to be handing out their email address like that?

A "known good email address" is valuable in the spamming world. As a result some sites are set up simply to harvest email addresses. Some are worse as they send malware, viruses, trojans etc.

So what do you do. Make your own with photos and clip art. Put to good use all the skills you have learnt at SeniorNet. Personalizing it with your own photo and message is likely to be more meaningful anyway.

The Federation has conducted a complete review of its brand and visual representation. The review was conducted upon recommendation of the research report undertaken in 2009 a report to which some of our Hutt City members contributed.

One of the most significant aspects is the new logo which has been approved by the Federation which is to be used from 1 January 2011.

We will be carrying out a revamp of our own branding, website, blog etc as soon as we are able.

TelstraClear is to supply new signage for free (the way we like it) as above.

Xmas Newsletter: This is currently in its final preparation and we hope to have it out in the next week or so.

If you have done a Computer Skills course you might like to look at some of our other classes. A Word Processing would increase your knowledge for use in all sorts of things - letters, Minutes, anything requiring general typing - or you may like to make your own Christmas cards or calendars as personalised gifts. Of course Picasa is absolutely great to to get those photos organised.

Hoax: A hoax has been going around about TelstraClear saying that if you push #90 or #09 then your phone can be taken over. A simple Google search reveals this as a hoax. The latest Newsletter has been emailed/posted.

In it is the official announcement of the AGM to be held on the 13 July at the Avalon Pavilion starting at 2 PM. As you will read we have changed the system for those who get the paper version (70 people) moving to a wrap around system rather than enveloping. This is to save our volunteers some time. One small side effect is that those getting the email version will have a blank page (the wrap around address page) with their version. Although we could delete it it saves time just to leave it in.

Multiple Editing

If you have a document where you want to make the same change to several pieces of text, whether font, italics, colour, etc, there are two ways of simplifying the action.

The Format Painter.

Make the required change to the first item.
With the item selected, double-click the Format Painter button
on the toolbar. (A single click will allow only one further change).
The cursor now has a brush attached to it.
‘Paint’ it across a group of words or just click on individual words.
When finished, tap the Esc key to cancel the Format Painter.

The F4 Key.

Make the required change to the first item.
Select a group of words or just place the Insertion Point in a single word.
Tap the F4 key and repeat until finished.

Classroom Computers and System Protection

Classroom computers usually need to be restored to a standard condition after use by students. At SeniorNet Hutt City we have used several methods of achieving this.

Initially, we manually restored our computers weekly but then found that GoBack software would do this automatically at every restart. This has served us well for a number of years.

When we moved to dual booting with XP and Vista on some computers, we found that GoBack was not compatible with dual booting.

About this time Microsoft introduced Steady State free software. Installed separately on XP and Vista, it provides system protection by discarding changes at restart. Separate user profiles are required for the Administrator, who has access to Steady State and the student. Each must log on separately. To make permanent changes, the Administrator has to restart the computer several times, particularly when adding new features to the student profile. Microsoft has decided not to upgrade Steady State to suit Windows 7.

We have installed Returnil, free third party software, in several of our classroom computers running Windows XP only and on a trial computer with dual booting XP and Windows 7. They are running satisfactorily and the update process is shorter than with Steady State. There are no separate Administrator and student profiles.

On startup Returnil copies the operating system into a virtual image where all changes are made, leaving the main system intact. On shutdown, the virtual image is deleted and a new image is created on restart. In this manner, the actual operating system is never affected by viruses, Trojans, malware and other malicious threats nor by any student changes.

Returnil password protection allows the TechTeam to carry out Windows and AntiVirus updates in the single user space but prevents permanent changes by students.

We like to provide our members with full access to our computers, in much the same way that they have at home. Returnil lets us achieve this by allowing a single user space.

We have now set up our XP only computers to be dual booting XP and Windows 7 and installed Returnil on Windows 7 also. Next we intend to replace Steady State with Returnil on our dual boot XP and Vista computers and thus considerably reduce the effort required to update software and to add new features.

A letter of appreciation has been received from SeniorNet Palmerston North regarding the SeniorNet Administration Program (SNAP) that was designed by Brian T. of our Tech Team. It is moments like this that make all the hard work worthwhile.

It is now used by about 50 of the 80 SeniorNets and is provided at basically no cost to any Learning Centre that wants it. At the start there were several queries each week to clarify its operation, but this has basically slowed now to almost zero.

Remit at recent AGM: At the last Federation AGM a couple of remits were tabled. One that requires more analysis and investigation called for a change to the funding method which in effect would provide a greater percentage of funds for the smaller Centres.

This is a very complex matter (rent, a major cost, is normally higher in larger towns). The motion was deferred in order to allow Learning Centres to consider the matter in more depth and to obtain more information.

As an outcome of some investigation the Federation has done has provided us with a breakdown of their income stream. The assistance now given by TelstraClear stands out. All the more reason to support them.

At the Committee meeting following the AGM the following were elected to hold Office:

They have also set the date for the next AGM as 10 May 2011 at the Wellington Airport Lounge as usual.

Federation Annual General Meeting

Four of your Committee attended this today along with about 40 or so members from various Learning Centres.

As we said previously our local Representative was re-elected unopposed but every other region that came up for election required a vote. An interesting point is that Christchurch, which is the largest Learning Centre with about 1400 members, makes no claim on the Federation for the hours they teach which aids us all.

A couple of remits were presented, one being defeated and the other held over for further consideration.

Again a very good day and we welcomed the opportunity to talk to others and to swap views within our organisation.

REGIONAL MEETING REPORT

Regional Meeting

A Regional Meeting was held on the 16th of April with attendance from Foxton (a new Learning Centre - only 3 months old), Horowhenua, Kapiti, Upper Hutt, Porirua and of course ourselves as the host Centre. Unfortunately Wairarapa and Waikanae were unable to attend.

From the Federation we had Grant Sidaway and our Regional Rep Colin Young.

In a special session the Retirement Commissioner gave an extremely interesting presentation about the Sorted website and other matters.

Each Centre provided a 'Snapshot' of its situation regarding tutors, membership, premises, teaching methods, Courses, use of laptops, etc. In the discussion session debate concentrated on Manuals and Grant provided us with several options and ideas.

In his talk Grant told us -

SeniorNet has about 17,000 members spread over 80 Learning Centres
The Minister of Senior Citizens is very supportitive
50 Centres are using the Hutt City produced SNAP administration system
TEC funding will remain at same level as last year for the current year but the future process is still unknown
Telstra Clear is the major sponsor and must be promoted to members

Later he demonstrated an iPhone and spoke about our marketing.

Another informative meeting and Kapiti have volunteered to host the next meeting. Colin has agreed to allow his name to go forward as our Regional Rep for another term which is greatly appreciated.

Last week a business expo was held at the Lower Hutt Town Hall. The Chairman attended and entered a competition to win $1000 of free advertising in the Hutt News.

And he won. So that is really great news. Keep a lookout for the adverts.

Seniornet Hutt City is hosting a Seniornet Regional meeting on Friday. This draws representatives from 8 Seniornets together. As part of the day's proceedings there will be a presentation by the Retirement Commissioner, Diana Crossan especially for SeniorNet members.

Her presentation will start at 11am and will last for around 45 minutes. All Seniornet Members are cordially invited to come, and you are welcome to bring a spouse / partner / friend / neighbour. This has been arranged by Grant Sidaway and he hopes that the Media will be present at that time, therefore we would really appreciate some support for this portion of the day.

If you can come on this Friday, the 16th, you could let us know by return email but you could also just turn up at 11.

REGIONAL MEETING

Hutt City will be hosting a day long Wellington Area Regional Meeting next Friday at the Avalon Pavilion. Along with ourselves, the Learning Centres attending will be Kapiti, Horowhenua, Waikanae, Wairarapa, Upper Hutt and Porirua plus we hope that a new SeniorNet that has just started in Foxton will be able to attend.

All our volunteers have been hard at work preparing for the day where we anticipate around 50 people will attend. Apart from the Federations Executive Officer Grant Sidaway, we will have our Regional Representative (nomination of a Representative for the next two years will take place at the meeting) and we will also have the Retirement Commissioner giving a presentation.

A report on the day will be in the Blog and our June Newsletter.

Federation News : The latest Newsletter from the Federations advises -

Our Learner Rate will be reduced to reflect a more cautious approach due to a combination of Government capping of TEC funds, more learner hours being claimed than previous and a degree of uncertainty as to the outcome of a review of the TEC.

Some Lottery Board funding has been obtained to assist with our Regional Meetings

Unfortunately not enough Learning Centres were interested in obtaining professionally written Courses through PC Simplicity (we were one Centre who was in favour)

Every Centre has been supplied with a DVD guide to Windows 7 (we have received ours)

A couple of more links to sites such as the Retirement Commissioners Get Sorted site are now at the Federations website www.seniornet.co.nz (why not have a look now).

Discounts: It is frustrating when members tell us they have paid full price for something such as a magazine subscription, Life Insurance, Travel Insurance, software etc and we tell them of all the various discounts available to SeniorNet members online at the Federations website. So if you are looking to purchase something, check out the Federation website first.

Regional Meeting: The next Regional Meeting will be hosted by us at the Avalon Pavilion on Friday the 16 April. This is a large undertaking which we must fit in with our continued day to day work for Hutt City and our planning is about to get underway. It is anticipated that we will host at least 50 - 60 SeniorNetters from the lower North Island for a full on, day long, meeting.

This exciting new class uses free software which you can either download off the net, or from the data CD that you will get on the first day of the class.

Picasa lets you download your photos from your Flash Drive, enables them to be organised in a number of ways, allows editing and enhancement (eg cropping, remove 'red eye' etc). It is the easiest way we have seen to make a great slideshow.

Picasa: A new course will commence this term using the free Google Picasa photoshop program. Any member interested please phone Jeanette as soon as possible as demand for this course is very high and we have already had to add another session.

From the something new every day file: In America it is being reported that criminals are having flash drives made with a company's logo on them. They then drop them in the company car park. The person finding them thinks that they will find the owner by inserting it into an office PC. The flash drive then leaves a virus to enable the company's PC's to be hacked.

FEDERATION NEWS – DECEMBER 2009

Funding: We are pleased to report the TEC officially approved our funding for 2010. The level of funding is the same as for 2009.

NZQA Quality Audit:
To ensure the Federation and the Learning Centres meet the NZQA requirements an Audit was conducted in November and we passed with flying colours!

TelstraClear Registrations and Competition:
The TelstraClear competition announced in November has now been extended. The close off is now 28th February 2010.

Retirement Commission:
We are pleased to announce a new partnership with the Retirement Commission; keep an eye out for tools tips and techniques in the upcoming newsletters and on www.seniornet.co.nz .

WARNING - AVAST ANTI VIRUS

There have been problems with the latest Avast download. Our advice is to just ignore any warning of a Trojan WIN32;Delf-MZG as it is a false warning.

Best at present is to either ignore it until a fix comes or uninstall it and put in AVG.

END OF TERM 4 AND A COMPETITION

The last Term for 2009 is coming to an end.

It has been another successful one with student numbers holding up well - maybe it is the new premises??
Preparation for the December Newsletter is underway as are arrangements for the Volunteers end of year Xmas function which this year will be held on Wednesday 9 December at 10.15 at the Angus. Invitations have been emailed to all those who have
helped during the year. If you did volunteer during the year and didn't get an email please contact us.

FEDERATION RESEARCH DOCUMENT

The Federation was able to gain some funding from The Lotteries Grants Board to carry out an in depth survey of members. This research has now been published. A copy of the final report is available on www.seniornet.co.nz – you will see a “Research Report” tab on the home page.

The report confirms the Federation and its Learning Centres provide an extremely valuable service to the community of New Zealand with the quality teaching it performs and sets out a platform on which to move forward.

We encourage members to read - or at least glance through the topics. As it is an extremely thorough report of some 50 odd pages a quick summary is provided by a short PowerPoint presentation which highlights the key points. We have a hard copy at the Centre for anybody interested but please leave this at the Centre for others to read.

FEDERATION REGIONAL MEETING

A Federation Regional Meeting was hosted by Porirua SeniorNet this week to which 50 people attended including 9 from Hutt City. It was as usual a very interesting day with another great presentation from Grant Sidaway and many topics discussed and debated. A full report will be in the next newsletter.

EXPO

We were again present at the Hutt Valley Health and Well Being Expo along with 40 others. We thank those members who volunteered to help us on the day to highlight SeniorNet to those in the valley. It was a well attended day and we look forward to another Expo next year.

Newsletter: The latest Newsletter is in the process of being emailed/posted. Again we ask if you have an email addres and are getting the paper copy let us know. Use of email is not only a tremendous cost savings but it makes a huge difference to our volunteers workload and with the email version you get the colour version.

Tutors Meeting: We had a meeting with some tutors last Monday when we discussed the set up of the new rooms, manuals, the upcoming Expo, an upcoming Regional Meeting, the coming Term and various other matters. It would seem the current rooms set up is satisfactory but we will be looking at curtains if the sun starts to cause problems with viewing the screens.

WINK:The Tech Team took the opportunity to demonstrate a new teaching aid called WINK and we discussed ways of using this and providing copies of the programs produced through it, for students.

MORNING TEA

Last Friday we hosted a very pleasant and successful morning tea for about a dozen of our fellow tenants. This gave us the opportunity to explain what we are about and to show them around the Centre. A great outcome was that many of them took some of our brochures to display in their offices.

It was so successful we will look at repeating it; maybe on an annual basis.

MSC Cruises

Possible group discount offer

Discussions are underway with MSC Cruises to see if a group discount offer could be arranged for members of SeniorNet. MSC specialise in Mediterranean and Northern European cruises. Its early days yet but it would appear if we can get groups of more than 16 people per cruise then some form of discount would apply. At this stage an indication of interest from members would be helpful. Please let me know if you could be interested in cruising in the future. Email us please.

10th ANNIVERSARY AGM

Raewyn's marvellous cake

A very successful AGM was held on the 22 July with a good turnout of members and some visitors from other SeniorNets. We farwelled Cathie from our Committee but have now been joined by Ruby.

On the day several of our members who have been around from the beginning and a little later, reminisced a bit about the past. We were also pleased to hear from Mr. SeniorNet himself, Jack Hazlett.

Later the Chairman's wife cut the cake which had been so wonderfully made by Raewyn.

To give some details of our background -

The idea to start a SeniorNet in the Hutt came following a talk on the 16 March 1998 by Grant Sidaway to the Combined Probus Club of Hutt. Our major sponsors at our start up were Telecom NZ and the Rotary Club of Western Hutt.

The first meeting of the Steering Committee was held on the 23 November 1998 with our Incorporation taking place on the 24 December 1998.

A great deal of thanks is owed to those who worked so hard and diligently a decade ago (many of whom are still hard at work today) as well as the tremendous assistance we got from New Zealand's first SeniorNet, Wellington.
